The Wildhearts – Earth Vs London - Saturday 22nd June – Kentish Town Forum
Having missed the first half of the tour due to work commitments and not being able to make it to the more northern venues with time to get the train back to Portsmouth, I was really hoping that there would be a second leg of the tour until the London Kentish Town Forum gig was announced, The same place as the birthday bash was held last year the only thing that stands in my way now I was thinking was the South Western Trains timetable oh and the closure of the Northern Line. Not 6 months ago I was left at Guildford train station for 6 hours as I missed the last train by 2 minutes, to safely make the journey home this year I had to compromise and make the decision to leave the gig 15 minutes early and subsequently miss the encore (if there was one)(which knowing the band there would have been)
Determined to not let the worry of making it home spoil my evening I ventured to The Forum as they say in the industry the show must go on and it certainly did. Baby GodzillaFirst up were the absolutely bonkers insane band Baby Godzilla, I've seen the occasional guitarist or singer that decides to venture into the crowd and usually ends up getting held back by a 10m mike wire wrapped around a monitor so when I heard that this band play in the audience I figured they needed to bring it if they were to get away with any kind of respect… well its safe to say that if you are a punk/hardcore/metal band and you haven’t seen these before go along and learn how things are done properly, even the drummer came into the crowd, there was pretty much no part of the venue that wasn't touched by at least one member of the band during the short set as they continued to play as if they were in the right place and the crowd were the ones in the wrong place.
Loud angry rawkus bellowing with hint of harmony and and gentle pinch of rhapsody sums this band up, I think if the art of music could steal your soul and feed it back to you through your eye via a pipe made out of the remains of a string based instrument this would be the band that would start that particular revolution. When they left their makeshift stage the crowd reformed at the front to ready themselves for the very different Eureka Machines.
Eureka Machines
Eureka Machines came on to the stage to a rather different and bizarre version of the 20th century opening fox on a recorder or flute well a wind instrument of some kind that's for sure.
They then started the 7 song set this is the first time I have seen the band and was a very welcome addition to the tour they have a very current sound yet contain a powerful old school punky rock and roll vibe and dare I say it a little bit of pop rolled into it, I really think they will appeal to a variety of generations, in general the songs were vastly catchy and the guys have the distinct image and mannerisms which portray true professionalism within their set. Affluenza was one of my favourite songs of the evening however that was until they played (I’m) Wasting My Time (Yet Again) how have I not heard this song before it has literally everything a punk pop song should have simple catchy lyrics a rock sturdy bassline with some hella catchy riffs and hooks, its safe to say I would actually buy the album based on this song alone. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing more of Eureka Machines soon and hope that they stop by my home town of Portsmouth on their next tour. The Wildhearts
But then came The Wildhearts they have a really precise way of making the crowd interact and feel at one with frontman Ginger Wildheart and the rest of the band.
The first half of the set consisted of Earth Vs The Wildhearts played in full, aside from a couple of short breather/tuning gaps in between the album was more or less seamlessly re-enacted from start to finish. Starting with “Greetings From Shitsville” to which the crowd joined in come to think of it there was not a single song the crowd didn't join in with. The power of The Wildhearts as live performances go is sincerely outstanding and crowd participation is always at a maximum and unlike some other gigs I've attended in the past where the odd head nod and screaming at a famous classic followed by an illusion of disarray when they attempt to play a new song…. To the fans every Wildhearts song ever written is a classic.. just putting it out there but you need to attend a Wildhearts gig to see for yourself the amount of credibility the band have among their avid fan base. This was proved in the second half of the set where the crowd get to choose what song they wanted to hear in a cheering based democracy, a brilliant idea to ensure every gig is different, but to me this shows how diverse the band really are and their ability to pick up a song that may not of been played live for 20 years and play it like they have just written it. Some of the hits included, Nothing Ever Changes But The Shoes, Sick Of Drugs, Just In Lust and a rather extended version of the awesome Whoa Sh!t You Got Through with the help of everyone in the crowd. This was a truly sensational night and one I will not forget in a long time. The tour is still going on with dates continuing this week in Bristol, Leicester, Newcastle and Leeds, and another chance to catch Ginger Wildheart in December for his birthday show with guest still to be announced. http://www.thewildhearts.com/tour/ |
