Goodwood Revival 2013 - FridayAhhh the start of another great festival, Friday was such an exciting journey across to Goodwood following some of the vehicles that were to be in the tax exempt car park, upon getting to the Revival this is the first part many people would have come across, A vast section of this years car parking was dedicated to any and all vehicles that are tax exempt.
The car park had such an array of vehicles parked in that it would of easily counted as a stand alone car show, there was also a fairground and a Wall Of Death set out in this area. This side of the Revival was called over the road and also had lots of trading stalls, bars, eateries, two live music stages and it played as a makeshift home for the famous Bonhams auction house.
However this was only a small part of the site as the main event was held on the other side of the road at the famous Goodwood racing circuit, crossing the footbridge you can see a further array of stalls and get an idea of how large this side of the track really is, there was even a complete retro Tescos shop built just for the occasion.
Just around the corner was a Delonghi cafe where I found a couple of period buskers propped up against the side wall
The Richmond Trophy Practice Session was the first session I managed to catch and was rather thrilling to watch Julian Bronson and Gary Pearson coming in with a 0.229 second gap between them both on lap 9 of 10, Below is Julian Bronson driving the Scarab-Offenhauser.
Tour De France Celebrations across the weekend even saw Sir Chris Hoy MBE riding around the 2.4mile long track on a 1920's steel framed bike leading the 72 strong group of riders all on pre 1966 bikes to mark the 100th anniversary of The Tour De France.
The Chichester Cup official timed practice saw rear engined Formula Juniors of a type that raced between 1958 and 1962 with the top lap nearly 4 seconds ahead coming from Chris Drake in the Elva Ford 300.
The next set of cars on track was the Fordwater Trophy official practice session and it was an absolute blast watching David Smithies and Jochen Mass fight it out to get the fastest lap Smithies managed to secure pole position in his Austin Healey 100/6 with an astonishing 1:39:402 lap, whilst Jochen Mass tried as hard as he could to shave off vital seconds in the Mercedes-Benz 300SL 'Gullwing' getting a quickest lap of 1:39.839.
As soon as the session had finished I headed over to the airstrip as the English Electric Canberra Jet Bomber was due to fly overhead. When I made it to the field there was also a Supermarine Spitfire and a P-51D Mustang coming in to land. Unfortunately the Canberra didn't have enough room to perform a high speed banking manoeuvre however it still managed to provide a special display and was an absolute delight to see and hear.
The next set of cars on the track was one of my favourites for Friday albeit not a race or practice session it was a special parade of Ford GT40's to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this magnificent racing car.
The next practice session on the track was the St Marys Trophy Official Timed Practice Pt 2, I had missed the first part of this practice session held earlier on in the day so I made sure I managed to get a good viewpoint for the entire practice session, It was very competitive with the top 10 drivers getting best laps within 3 seconds of Bill Shepherd with his top lap time being 1:31.377 pushing his Ford Galaxie 500 to the limits.
The following set of cars on the track was the RAC TT Celebration this was the 1st Official Practice session where the top driver managed to reach 100.20 mph and a lap time of 1:26.227 in the AC Cobra
The Glover Trophy official timed practice session saw Grand Prix and Formula 2 cars that had raced in 1961-1966 compete to gain the best position to start Sundays race, the cars being rather light had quite a few spins however managed to right themselves rather quickly without too much fuss or damage.
The First full race of the weekend was the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, A 90 minute two driver twilight race, The track was rather wet by this stage of the day and with the evening darkness rolling in with the rain combined with open cockpit racers made for quite a spectacle, however I wasn't quite brave enough to risk keeping the camera out in the rain for too long.
The racing had ended however unbeknown to me at the time the evenings entertainment was just about to begin, I decided to head back over the road to check out some of the stalls in the marketplace. It was then I heard some music coming from the inside of a rather large tent, so not wanting to walk in the rain back to the van just yet I thought I would head over and see what was going on inside. And I'm glad I did as I then found out that the tent was The Old Speckled Hen Live Music Stage.
Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer was on stage, I watched the performance and then stayed in the tent to watch the following entertainment for the rest of the evening. In fact afterwards I came back to visit The Old Speckled Hen's Live Music Stage so many times over the weekend that I have decided to give it a mini page all on its own which can be found by following the below link.
