The Goodwood Sunday School Charity Race Meet - 8th June 2014Goodwood played host to two new summer events on Sunday 8th June. The second all new event for the summer was aimed at getting the whole family in to horseracing. the new event aptly named Sunday School saw people flocking to the racecourse in their thousands. The day was made up in a similar fashion to any other race day held at the course, however as this was aimed at families there was a slightly more relaxed feel, all three enclosures were opened up and with very reasonable ticket prices made an inexpensive and very different day out for the entire family.
The Lennox enclosure which housed the funfair and adventure park area also boasted a fantastic viewing angle of the final bend coming in to the home straight.
There were many different things to see and do within this enclosure and all of the rides were totally free to go on and stayed busy throughout the entire day. the rides were not allowed to operate for a few mins as the horses passed by on track but were swiftly reopened after every race right up until the end of the day.
Amongst Jaxons favourite rides was the vintage Austin J40 merry go round.
Although Goodwood is not a hurdle based track there was also a miniature track set up alongside the home straight where the children could compete to the finish line jumping over the obstacles. I have to admit this was rather fun for adults also. Having children you have to try these things out with them.. honestly.
There was a stable attended by HEROS (Homing Ex-Racehorces Organisation Scheme) within the Lennox enclosure featuring an ex racehorse who you were allowed to stroke and hear all about.
There were also musicians playing soft jazz in one of the bar areas.
As if that wasn't enough there was also a full days racing ahead of us. The first of 6 races the "2.25 The Injured Jockeys Fund: Oaksey House Maiden Stakes" where the aptly named Pack Leader took the finish line in first place just shy of 2 minutes 12 seconds
We headed back up to the Richmond enclosure to grab a seat ready for the second race which was ran at 3pm "The Injured Jockeys Fund: Jack Berry House Stakes" saw Manomine completing the 1M 3F course in 2 minutes 27.31 seconds
The third race was won by Dr Parkes.
The fourth race was won by Number One London taking on the full 2M course in under 3 minutes 30 seconds.
The fifth race "The Goodwood Selling Stakes" was a very special race where the winning horse would be immediately auctioned off in the winners circle, Licence To Till was the winner completing this 1M long variant of the course in 1 minute 41.05 seconds.
Licence To Till was sold at auction in the winners circle immediately after the race for £8,000.
Race number 6 was very fast paced and despite Democretes being ahead Clockmaker soon gained pace and ended up taking the win.
The seventh and final race was won by Woodbridge with Blue Bounty coming a very close second.
As the gates of Goodwood close, We look forward to returning again this Friday for the next instalment of Three Friday Nights featuring a full evenings racing before the site gets transformed yet again, this time for the Naughty Boy Soundsystem DJ set.
