The Lounge Kittens @ The Edge Of The Wedge - 24-04-2014
I had the chance to meet the Kittens at the show I even scored a little interview with one of the Lounge Kittens Zan Lowther (Pictured above)
Interview With Lounge Kitten Zan LawtherMe. For those that have never seen or heard you, how would you describe your unique style.
Zan. Imagine if Richard Cheese seduced all three of the Andrews Sisters and each had a little lounge baby.......well that's us! We take popular but unusual songs and put our own alt-lounge twist on them. Me. How long have you been together? Zan. We met a few years ago and the girls had already dreamed up the concept of Lounge Kittens. I was drafted in on a drunken night out just over a year ago. We didn't really get going until Jen booked us some gigs last summer and we thought 'Oh. We'd better write some songs then!!' Me. What caused you to come together as a group? Zan. I met the girls through Rock Choir (Jen is a choir leader in Southampton, Bournemouth, Chirstchurch & the New Forest) - Timia and Jen went to university together and then I met them at choir about 4 years ago. We've been mates for ages and our similar tastes in music and ridiculous sense of humour brought us together. Me. Was you originally intending to go for such a pastiche sound? Zan. Yes. We wanted to take music we love and have fun with it, to give it a new dimension and cross it with the vintagey sound inspired by the harmonies. We think really carefully about our song choices because certain songs can't be 'kittenized' but I think one of the things that attracts people to listen to us is the fact that they know the songs, it might just take them a moment to work out which song it is! Me. What are your musical influences? Zan. Between the three of us I don't think there is a genre of music we DON'T listen to! We all come together on rock, the classics, motown, 80's power ballads, that sort of thing.....but individually Timia is into psycho-billy, ska and a lot of stuff I've never heard of! Jen has a classical background but is responsible for all the pop-punk in our set and I mostly wander between hard rock and indie-folk. There is literally no one we wouldn't cover!! Me. The rollin video seems to have severely taken off with over 157,000 views as of this morning, did you expect it to have that great a response in such a quick time? Zan. Not at all! The day we posted it we got 3,000 views and we were so chuffed with that - we had no idea it would go as far as it has! Me. You mentioned that there is a new video in the pipeline, Can you offer any clues as to which song it will be? Zan. That is classified information I'm afraid. Which one do you think we should do? Me. Well your rendition of The Beautiful People certainly got one of the biggest applauses of the night and I think you could have some fun with the video for that. Me. Will it feature the Ferrari again? C'mon own up, which one of you owns the car? Zan. Haha, no cars in the next video (a lot of viewers were concerned for the safety of the car - which was fine and not scratched, by the way). We were loaned the cars by a lovely choir member, Kerrie, who kindly let us use her house and her son's Ferrari. We were very, very lucky. Me. Tonight's show had sold so many tickets that the event had to be reclassified from all seated to standing to allow for an expansion on ticket sales, Is this normally the case in other towns? Zan. Well, yeah, I guess it has been....maybe we need bigger venues haha? We haven't strayed too far from our hometown of Southampton yet so it will be interesting to see what happens elsewhere. Me. Recently you made a couple of festival announcements, Are these recent bookings or have you had to keep the news under wraps for a while? Zan. Sonisphere and BoomTown were announced a little while ago so we didn't have to hold onto them for too long. But Glastonbury was hanging in the balance for several weeks before it finally slotted into place and confirmed, so holding on to that one was really tough. Me. I bet that was a hard thing to do, especially from family and friends? Zan. Yeah, we didn't want to jinx Glastonbury by mentioning it to anyone before it was confirmed but inside we were like 'OMG GLASTONBURY!!!!' There are still a couple of announcements left to come as well so watch this space... Me. Which of these announcements are you most proud? Zan. We're proud of ALL of them - we never expected any of this so just to be asked to play such amazing festivals is frankly a bit ridiculous. Sonisphere is pretty special because Limp Bizkit are playing as well as a number of other bands we cover so to be amongst rock royalty is going to be really fun. For me it's Glastonbury though. It was the first festival I went to with my mates, way back when I was 15 and I've been back countless times so to actually play there is just crazy. I may have cried a little bit. So excited! Me. There was a lot of content in tonight's show, Do you have anything left up your sleeve for the festival performances? Zan. But of course! We're working on new songs all the time. We have tonnes of material and we adapt our set list to each event so we've never done the the same show twice. Me. Is there a single defining moment that you can think of that has changed the course of your career so far? Zan. The moment Limp Bizkit posted the video on their Facebook page. Without a doubt. We got the tweet from Fred Durst saying he loved it and then moments later it was on their Facebook page and the internet just spazzed out. We wouldn't have had nearly the same level of exposure without their support. Me. you mentioned that you are still unsigned, Would you consider signing if the right offer was placed on the table? Zan. We haven't really thought about it that much, which sounds really cliché but at the moment we're just trying to take it all in, say yes to as much as we can and enjoy it. We'd definitely be up for taking it further though. Me. What was the last song you listened to? Zan. I was listening to Foy Vance on my walk to work this morning. I saw him live at the Wedgewood Rooms last year, so last night I was particularly excited to be allowed to use 'Foy's dressing room' for our show at Edge of the Wedge haha! Me. Do you have any guilty pleasures? Zan. If you mean musically, we really don't have one. We're not ashamed of any of our quirky musical tastes - so much so that most of them ended up in our set! Last night we were discussing the joys of Disney's The Little Mermaid and the quality of the songs in that film haha! With regards to anything else I think our biggest guilty pleasure is time off - we've been so busy that any chance we get to just hang around in our pj's doing nothing we all end up feeling terribly guilty. Definitely not complaining though!! For those of you that missed The Lounge Kittens at what could be the last time they play such an intimate venue I have attached below a photo gallery and a list of future performances as I urge you not to miss them for a second time.
