Royal Blood - Portsmouth Guildhall - 02-03-2015
What happens when the hottest band in the uk come to town? They
sell out the guildhall of course, despite being the second time that Royal
Blood have performed in Portsmouth so far this year just two months after playing The
Pyramids back in January, unable to attend the previous gig I was excited when I had my photo pass confirmed.
Mini MansionsFirst on the bill was a Los Angeles based band called Mini Mansions, featuring the very charismatic stage presence of Zach Dawes in a very fetching floral suit, Tyler Parkford on keyboards and Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman as a drumstick wielding singer. Mini Mansions provided a fun and funky start to the gig.
Royal BloodNext up were of course the Brit Award winning duo Royal Blood, having missed the performance back in January at The Pyramids I was very keen to find out first hand what all of the recent hype was about.
From the second song "Come On Over" rather than shooting I found myself in a daze switching my stair between Mike Kerr's bass guitar and his array of pedals trying to fathom out how so much sound can be produced from just one bass guitar.
Watching the rest of the set in total amazement I am still unable to work it all out in my head, especially when it came to the low growl bass-lines and high end solos being played simultaneously on "Ten Tonne Skeleton" and "Loose Change"
The duo crammed an entire album in to the set along with a couple of b-sides and a cover version of the T-Rex classic 20th Century Boy, before finishing the set with an extended version of "Out Of The Black"
I thoroughly enjoyed the gig, I would go as far as saying that it was not only my favourite performance this year so far, but also the band have my vote on the best début album I have heard in a long time, with the only downfall being that both of the bands on the bill had relatively short sets, I would like to have seen them each play for a bit longer.
