Car-Fest South 2013 The ShowgroundCar-Fest, a concept imagined by BBC Radio 2 DJ and renowned petrolhead Chris Evans, was brought to reality last year and is now in its second year, "The Best Car-Fest Yet" Hailed Chris Evans on sunday evening.
The three day long festival was set out to bring families together and experience a totally new atmosphere, incorporating a motor show, fairground and live music festival all in the one place. The festival also had an objective, which was to raise as much money for Children In Need as possible. The festival site was split up into sections to allow for all of the different events and activities to run alongside each other to ensure as much as possible was crammed into the weekend, The site was rather well planned and had areas for the whole family to be entertained simultaneously, everything from watching live shows at the big top or showground, being trackside as the cars storm up the hillclimb and even nipping to the fun fair, there were also plenty of stalls and boutiques to keep the adults entertained, along with static displays car clubs and pleasure rides. The Showground side of the festival was quite reminiscent of some of the agricultural shows that I had been taken to as a child and there was more than enough going on to keep me entertained, and looking at the smiles on the faces of the people I met, there was plenty of fun being had, Some of the shows that were run on a daily basis included, JCB Dancing Diggers, Red Dragon Monster Truck, The Knights Of The Damned Medieval Jousting, The Red Barrows, The Royal Signals White Helmets, The Kangaroo Kid.
The Red Dragon Monster Truck even had its own dedicated arena where if brave enough you could jump in the back and get buckled in for a thrill ride where the Monster Truck would take you across the top of three cars plucked from the scrap yard, however the cars resembled three pancakes by the end of day 3.
There was also a Big Top and a funfair including with a Big Wheel, Helter Skelter and Merry Go Round.
to keep the children entertained, this festival is certainly tailored to suit the children of all ages so far. The Armed Forces were also in attendance, with workshops and activities for people of all ages to “get involved” in ranging from a Red Arrows flight simulator, holding a rocket launcher also running and commando rolling through an army style blow up assault course. I caught a glimpse of Chris Evans and Pudsey Bear pretty early into the festival, I thought I would take a stroll over and see what was going on, I later found out I had walked right into the filming session for The One Show which was later shown on the big screens, I followed Chris Evans and Pudsey along with crowds of people whilst they walked around the site and cut various ribbons to open all of the attractions this was all carried out with the aid of the children of course.
BBC Children In Need
The BBC had a huge part to play in this years Car-Fest as all of the profits went to BBC Children in need, after last year raising almost £1m for the children’s charity the aim this year was to cross that Million pound mark and was then later upped to try and reach £1.5m.
The starring car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was driven up the hillclimb daily with various celebrities in the driving seat, there was even a mini version which Chris Evans son Noah rode in front of the full sized car.
There were fun packed activities all over the site to help keep the children entertained, Pudsey Bear was pretty much everywhere with his company being very well received wherever he wandered. Street performers including Stormtroopers were also seen about the festival site.
There were also free food workshops and a Cakes Vs Pies competition for the best efforts over the weekend, Judged by The Great British Bake Off's judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry and also James Martin stepped up to the plate as a guest judge.
Laverstoke Park Farm saw 60,000 visitors across the three days of Car-Fest South due to the event selling out pretty early on. Raising over £1m for the charity Children In Need and above all everyone I met had fun at the festival and some even said that it was the first and only time they had been to a live music festival let alone such a diverse event.
Keep an eye out for more reviews and photos from Car-Fest South coming soon and will be available to see on the landing page
