Goodwood Three Friday Nights - Horseracing Followed By Trevor NelsonHaving spent most of my childhood owning and riding my own horses, I heard about the race meet and thought it would be the ideal time to get back on the horse so to speak. Having not been to the horse-racing since a child and aside from watching the odd bit of racing on the television the nearest I had been in recent years was to watch the greyhound racing. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with my mixed array of thoughts it rather much sounded like a good idea to go in with an open mind and take a peek at the goings on at a race meet.
I was overwhelmingly surprised, it was a rather polite and classy affair and a completely different class to the dog track, not quite the same as I remember from my gymkhana days either, I couldn't help thinking I was an extra in an top fashion advert with the amount of suits and very well clothed people around not a single dodgy waistcoat in sight, however I did spot a gentleman sporting a rather snazzy tie, I was made to photograph by the lovely group of people who accosted me early on. Having got there early and had a look around to find all of the necessary amenities it was soon time to find an ideal spot at the front to stand to watch the race on the big screen and attempt to photograph the winner crossing the line. The first race was about to start.
The ‘MTV Staying Alive Foundation’ Apprentice Stakes was the first race I must say it was a pretty close opener, having looked through the names prior to leaving this morning this was the race that included the horse that I was thinking of having a flutter with, however Bee Jay Kay came 3rd in this race but it sounded like the whole crowd was also backing the same horse as the roar when Bee Jay Kay came to the last few yards was immense even though the race had already been won by Rhombus. I took a seat at the top of the Richmond Pavillion to get a better view of the track for the next race.
The Three Friday Nights Handicap Stakes was a shorter race being 6 furlongs this was won by a horse called Wheres Reiley – ridden by Seb Sanders as you can see in the photo very closely followed by Chevise, One Last Dream and Pharoh Jake Back trackside again for the next race, The Gordon’s Stakes (Handicap) this was an extremely close race as you can see below all three placing horses and riders changing places as the winning 4 year old colt Duke Of Clarence – Ridden By Richard Hughes emerges from the middle to take the 1st place
The Trevor Nelson Fillies’ Stakes (Handicap) – Won by 3 year old filly Saucy Minx
But tonight was not just about the horse racing the added bonus was the DJ set by world famous Trevor Nelson. Before attending the meet I couldn't quite grasp the convergence of horse racing and really loud music as I've always been taught loud noises scare horses (and other animals) so the addition of music in my mind would scare the horses half to death, but being a smart man ahem… it suddenly dawned on me that the stables are not in the same grounds and once the racing has finished the horses get taken back to Goodwood House to rest for the night far enough away so the music aught not bother them in the slightest.
The racing had finished and the horses were taken from the parade ring back to the Stables at Goodwood house to then allow for the dance floor to be built and await the confirmation that the horses were all a safe enough distance from the venues to allow Trevor nelson to approach the stage and start his set, there were a couple of technical difficulties resulting in the music not starting as quickly as planned, but hey 10,000 people there and not a single complaint was heard there were people on all rungs of various social ladders waiting patiently, Trevor Nelson came on and claimed his audience starting the set with Basement Jaxx – Do Your Thing. A set filled with Hip Hop, Dance and R+B classics then followed great reactions from the night came as Luniz I got 5 on it merged almost seamlessly into "Blackstreet - No Diggity" but It goes without saying that the top crowd pleaser's of the night included “Daft Punk - Get Lucky” “Disclosure - White Noise” and “Rob Thicke - Blurred lines” the later of which saw crowd surfers I also witnessed a small mosh pit randomly break out to "Labrinth - Earthquake" the set gracefully ended with Bob Marley – One Love
All in all it was a really great day/evening/night and one I would certainly attend again in the future, I look forward to hearing the head-liners of next years Three Friday Nights, however until then there are plenty more things for everyone to look forward to at the Goodwood Estate in the coming weeks and months.
