Ugly Kid Joe @ The Electric Ballroom - Camden 05-11-2013Well what can I say, at the beginning of this week I certainly did not think I would be seeing some of my teenage favourites performing, Let alone being invited on to the stage by them, The band of course was Ugly Kid Joe who played to a sold out crowd Tuesday night in Camden Town London, U.K.J are back following their 15 year hiatus after disbanding in 1997, And they certainly know how to make a comeback tour work. Co-Headlining with Skid Row U.K.J played hit after hit with a newer song or two thrown in for good measure, "Devils Paradise" & "I'm Alright" were amongst the offerings from the new album Stairway To Hell, along with one of my newly found favourites "No One Survives" taking charge over the crowd. U.K.J started the set with material from the second studio album Menace To Sobriety including "Intro" "V.I.P" "C.U.S.T" also "Milkman's Son" was played a little later on in the set. Seeing U.K.J play material from this album was pretty awesome and all of the songs worked very well with each other, making the newer songs feel welcome.
One of the biggest hits played was of course "Cats In The Cradle" from the first studio album "America's Least Wanted" which if you had MTV at any point in the 90's would have invariably seen the video hourly as I'm sure that's how often it used to get played. Having been invited on stage prior, and this being one of my lifetimes most memorable songs, I felt the need to record the performance on my phone, You can see how the video came out by scrolling down to the bottom of the page. One of U.K.J's most famous songs from their repertoire "Everything About You" which, made popular by appearing in the classic film Waynes World & despite already featuring on the first Ep "As Ugly As They Wanna Be" Made its return on to the full release of the first studio album and later became a single in its own right, Was one of the biggest pleaser's of the evening and brought back a lot of nostalgic memories. U.K.J also had a bit of fun at the end of the gig by ending the set with Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades" Whitfield Crane introduced the crowd pleaser whilst stating his love for the song and his fondness of Lemmy and Motorhead.
With the sudden spark of interest in 90's bands and the new album out now I expect we will be seeing Ugly Kid Joe around a lot more in the not too distant future, At least I hope that we do. |
