Car-Fest South 2013 - AviationSpeed and agility came from all forms over the weekend, Especially when out of nowhere comes am Apache attack helicopter and proceeds to carry out a full air display right above the crowds, there was all mannor of iconic warbirds in the air, The Chinook, The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight consisting of the Avro Lancaster, Hawker Hurricane and of course the Spitfire, The Red Arrows also attended but the showstopper had to be the Mighty Avro Vulcan bomber plane.
At a cost somewhere in the region of £2m to keep this warbird flying it is always a sight for sore eyes every time she gets to display, and you know exactly when to expect her due to the mighty roar of the quad Rolls Royce engines, pushing such a huge mass through the above airspace..
The amazing agility of the Chinook was also a rather welcome sight, at one point there was a member of crew waving out of the back of the helicopter just before it went into a steep almost vertical incline and then tilting the nose down to perform a roller-coaster like manoeuvre. the crew then turned the Chinook on its axis to bow to the crowds and proceeded to do this along the perimeter of the festival site. Massive amounts of kudos go to the four strong team it takes to fly this magnificent helicopter.
The Apache also gave a rather stunning display. Several times a day it would take off and circle the festival site performing loops showing off just how hard the helicopter could bank.
Sadly the Red Arrows could not carry out a full display this weekend due to the amount of cloud coverage, despite trying to come back later on they had to turn back, they did however turn up on Saturday for a brief fly past to observe the area.
Again due to the amount of cloud coverage the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight could not carry out a full display at the advertised time, but came as a surprise when they turned up unexpected for a couple of fly pasts.
Genuinely a first for me and many others. I took the following video footage of this special show from a rather insane Piper Cub with fireworks attached to the ends of its wings.
The video unfortunately does not give the performance as much justice as it should. I started recording halfway through the show as I was not quite ready for what was going to happen. |
